Cold-Pressed Castor Oil: Hair Growth, Constipation Relief & More
Cold-pressed castor oil is 90% ricinoleic acid — a unique compound that supports hair-follicle blood flow, lubricates the gut, and may help reduce joint inflammation. It’s potent — use small amounts (1 tsp internal, 1 tbsp external) and never on broken skin without dilution.
What is Cold-Pressed Castor Oil?
Cold-pressed castor oil (Vilakku Ennai in Tamil, Arandi Tel in Hindi, Amudam in Telugu) is extracted from castor beans at low temperatures without chemical solvents. Only cold-pressed, food-grade castor oil is suitable for skin, hair, and limited internal use. Hot-extracted castor oil is industrial grade — used in lubricants and paints — and should never be used on the body. Always look for “first-press, food-grade, cold-pressed” on the label.
Why “cold-pressed” matters more here than other oils
Hot-extracted castor oil loses its ricinoleic acid integrity and may contain solvent residues. Cold-pressed castor oil retains the full ricinoleic acid profile that makes it effective for hair, skin, and traditional wellness uses.
The 8 traditional Tamil uses
1. Hair growth (eyebrow, eyelash, scalp)
Mix 1:1 with cold-pressed coconut or almond oil (castor alone is too thick). Apply to scalp 2x a week, leave 2 hours, wash. Visible thickening in 6–8 weeks.
2. Mild constipation relief
1 tsp in warm water before bed. Effect within 8–12 hours. Do not use more than 2 days in a row — it’s a stimulant laxative, not a daily solution. Avoid in pregnancy.
3. Joint comfort (knees, lower back)
Warm 2 tbsp castor oil. Apply to joint, cover with a cotton cloth + warm towel for 30 minutes. Twice a week. Traditionally used for stiff joints in Tamil households.
4. Stomach comfort in children (Tamil tradition)
Massage 1 tsp warm castor oil on the navel and tummy in clockwise circles. Used for centuries in Tamil households for newborns and toddlers for colic and gas. Consult your paediatrician before use.
5. Dry, cracked heels
Apply pure castor oil to clean heels at bedtime. Cover with cotton socks. Visible repair in 5–7 nights.
6. Eye strain (vilakku enna)
One drop pure cold-pressed castor oil at the corner of each eye before sleep — a traditional Tamil practice for reducing eye strain. Stings briefly, then soothes.
7. Wound healing
Ricinoleic acid is mildly antimicrobial. Apply to small cuts or abrasions — supports healing. Not for deep wounds.
8. Castor oil pack (women’s wellness)
Soak a flannel cloth in castor oil, place on lower abdomen, cover with hot water bottle, 30 minutes. 3x a week. Used traditionally for menstrual discomfort.

Important cautions

Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly does castor oil support eyebrow growth?
Visible thickening in 4–6 weeks with daily night application. New growth follows the natural eyebrow growth cycle — roughly 12 weeks for full transformation.
Can I leave castor oil on my hair overnight?
Only when diluted 1:1 with coconut or almond oil. Pure castor oil is too thick and can clog follicles or cause headaches from scalp pressure.
